Self Motivation Tips – practical advice on self motivation

self motivation tips

Numerous papers, articles and books have been written on the topic of self motivation tips and no one can doubt the power and impact which motivation has on one’s performance. Words have power. If you articulate and present your thoughts in a motivating manner – it can cause your team to accomplish any goals – not matter how ambitious they are.

It is often said:

“Those who believe they can move mountains – do.”

“If you believe you cannot do it – you are right.”

Today I would like to present to you 3 effective self motivation tips to motivate yourself, which are based on my own experiences during my leadership journey while working in the corporate world, personal life, and for several nonprofit organizations.

Tip 1: Fake it till you make it!

My favorite one amongst self motivation tips is based on the principles of Laughter Yoga. Laughter yoga is a powerful therapy technique in which an instructor usually asks people in a group to just start laughing together. In the beginning, people are conscious of others, or stressed, or may be depressed. However, when one starts laughing – the laughter spreads like a contagion in no time after which everyone in the group can always be seen laughing. This powerful technique has been proven as a mechanism to cure people of depression, stress and many other psychological ailments.

Now, if you would like to apply this technique to motivate yourself – you simply need to start believing in yourself. If you want to be the leader of your team – start acting like the leader of your team. If you want to reach the epitome of success in your profession – start visualizing and act as that successful professional.

When you start believing and acting in a way that you wish you might one day do – you will be surprised how your mind and body will conspire to make that a reality.

Tip 2: Start now – rest of it will follow…

Often when I speak to many writers, they all talk about the dreaded “writer’s block”. It is a period during their writing journey when the mind goes blank – no new ideas arrive – and it is impossible to think of what to write the next thing about. To overcome this, I had once read in a book, a powerful tip on doodling.

Whenever you are stuck and cannot think of any ideas, just pick out a pen and paper and start writing whatever comes to your mind first. Don’t think too much at this point – just write what comes to your mind. You will observe that often the first thought you wrote leads to another, and that one leads to another, till the time comes when you have a topic you want to write about.

This principle can be applied to any field of work be it writing, painting or cold calling clients for sales.

Tip 3: Listen to the right guy!

Many years back, I had read the classic leadership and self-help book – “The Magic of Thinking Big” by Dr. David Schwartz in which Dr. Schwartz talks about our brain having two highly efficient foremen in charge of producing thoughts. One of them is called Mr. Triumph and the other one is called Mr. Defeat. They both are highly efficient at their jobs and depending on which foreman you feed more – the more of those particular kinds of thoughts are produced.

Mr. Triumph produces thoughts related to winning, positivity, success and happiness whereas Mr. Defeat produces thoughts related to negativity, hopelessness and low confidence. Mr. Triumph tells you that you can do it, you will succeed, and you will be happy; whereas Mr. Defeat tells you why you are good for nothing, why you would fail, and stay unhappy.

I found this analogy very useful and practical in real life and have applied it regularly in my personal life and career. Whenever I feel that a task is too tough to be done or an opportunity is too difficult to get – I only listen to Mr. Triumph who then starts working in the positive direction and produces thoughts which are critical for self motivation. Mr. Triumph automatically shows my brain the path to achieve that task or give me the strength to raise my hand for a shot at the opportunity.

So, if next time you are having thoughts of doubt about your capabilities – just call Mr. Triumph to action and he will bail you out without a doubt.
